Every year Thailand celebrates the holiday of Songkran, which involves many festivals throughout a 10-day period. Needless to say, during this time Thailand experiences a huge spike in the number of traffic fatalities.
LTI's international authorized dealer, Sithiporn Associates, delivered 45 Micro Digi-Cam (MDC) systems to the Thailand Highway Police. The MDC is a full-color, digital camera system that integrates with an LTI UltraLyte speed laser and an HP iPAQ data collector. The MDC software is programmed to collect and record the time, date, location and speed, coupled with a digital image of the violator’s license plate.
Thailand Highway Police received extensive training and implemented an aggressive speed enforcement program. They even involved the local media to spread the word about how this new technology generates rock-solid photographic evidence of speeding.
The police focused their efforts in problem areas, where the locals learned that the shoulder was too narrow to be feasibly pulled over for speeding. The police captured the speed and license image, then sent the information to a forward location, where officers safely pulled over the violator.
In comparison to the previous holiday season, the MDC system and the aggressive public safety awareness program contributed to reducing the fatality rate by 29.75%.
